Another not-to-be-missed site for Chinese Language learners is Erik Peterson’s “Online Chinese Tools.”
By day, Erik is a computer programmer and linguist working towards a Ph.D. at the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. In his spare time, he has created and made available a number of tools to assist everyone from “the novice Chinese language student to the advanced programmer” in learning and using Chinese.
My favorite: His Word 97 input macro, a simple add-in to Microsoft Word, makes it possible to type both simplified and traditional Chinese characters in Microsoft Word 97 using the pinyin system. I used this tool as the front-end for creating the characters on this site. This is one we should have had to pay for, folks. (Update: The macro also works with Word 2000 and XP.)
